About

After sharpening his musical teeth on the burgeoning London underground scene of the late noughties, Gabriel in 2010 finally decided to realise his vision of a band in which he could marry his love for traditional western blues-rooted songwriting with gypsy flavoured sounds and grooves of his native Carpathians. He called upon an old friend Carl Fox – renowned fashion and music photographer who is also formidable bassist who then brought in Hana – the antipodean violin prodigy able to play anything from Tchaikovsky to czardas and thus ‘Gabriel Kain & The Ables’ were born. Quickly establishing themselves as one of the capitals most revered live acts and despite being loosely compared to the likes of Nick Cave, Arthur Lee & Love or Tom Waits, they continue to produce their own uniquely fresh brew of music that they call ‘baroque’n'roll’.

With the exciting addition of Pasha on drums and percussion the 2013 line-up sees the Ables at their sharpest and rawest best!!

Gabriel Kain( Vocals and Guitar)-

the chief singer-songwriter of shady origin and reputable experience, who previously graced stages of numerous British and European festivals, sharing the bill with the likes of Gary Numan and Nick Cave. His religion is baroque’n’roll and he is constantly striving to find the door that leads to his very own musical 13th chamber and only The Ables can help him to succeed in this quest.

Hana Piranha(Vocals and Violin)-

violin prodigy and super talented singer and songwriter from New Zealand whose intense dark energy creates the proverbial secret ingredient in this potent brew. Classically trained at Purcell School Of Music, but forever lost to rock’n’roll, she is the fallen angel that carries away the souls of her listeners into the twilight garden of unspeakable pleasures. Notable side projects include her sparse and stripped back violin based versions of rock and pop classics that have earned her a loyal youtube following.

Carl Fox(Bass and Bv’s)-

bass grooves forged by musical experience that spans for almost three decades, from post-punk, through new wave, alt-funk and trip-hop, until finally becoming the indisputable baron of baroque’n’roll. Carl’s talent doesn’t confine only to music – he is also responsible for all the visual aspects of the band, from flyers, through photos to videos. Proud holder of a degree in astrophysics, he is a through and through Renaissance man.

Pasha(Drums and Percussion)-

hailing from London and having studied drums and percussion at Planet Drum Music school in South London Pasha found himself performing around the world at Womad festivals and on the BBC with the group JOI , touring Europe as percussionist in  the musical ‘Trash’  and  playing Darbucca and Djembe  in many different London clubs! Providing the beats that matter and ignoring those that don’t for The Ables is where his true calling lies however.

After 18 months of rapturously received London shows, ranging from private parties to headlining The Barfly and Proud, Gabriel Kain and the Ables are now concentrating on promoting their own quarterly events at The Stags Head in Hoxton. If the first was anything to go by the rest should not be missed and they hope to bring this evening of music, burlesque and bacchanalian revelry to the rest of the UK and Europe.

Following along from this summers release (laid down at Toybox Studios-PJ Harvey/Steve Parrish and produced by cult producer Ben Dubuisson), the band are about to embark on two new recordings to further explore a darker dirtier groove, helped by the viking craftsman Andreas Jensen and backed up with suitably sultry visuals, we look forward to unleashing this particular beast!!

Here is what others have to say:

GABRIEL KAIN & THE ABLES combine lyrical romanticism and themes of displacement with the best kind of foot-stomping jigs you might find in an absinthe bar anywhere from Paris to Peking”
